A lot of people think that being frugal is all about being really tight with your money and not spending. But to me it means something different. By saving money on the not so important things we get to spend more (or save more towards) the things that we find truly important.
Over the last year I’ve made savings by doing numerous frugal things which has enabled us to save more money towards our mortgage and a new car. Here are my top 5 fabulously frugal things I did in 2018.
I paid for Christmas with survey earnings (again!)
For the last 2 years now I’ve paid for Christmas using money and gift cards earned by completing paid surveys. Completing surveys is a really easy way to make some extra cash from home. It may not be the best paid way to make money but can be done while you’re watching tv in the evening or waiting for the kids to come out of school.
I picked up freebies whenever I could
I absolutely love a good freebie hunt before I head to town. Apps such as Shopmium and Checkoutsmart offer regular grocery freebies. Also try social media and google for coupons and voucher codes.
I hunted for reduced food
Finding reduced food in store can be a great way to save money on your groceries. But always remember it’s not a bargain if you don’t need it or won’t eat it. I regularly pick up reduced bread to put in the freezer to take out when we need it.
We went on a super budget holiday
Last February while the kids were off school for a week we decided to go on a very budget holiday to the Peak District. We managed to get a lovely cottage heavily reduced due to it being so last minute. We took food with us for the week and did free activities in the local area. We all had a lovely time, got to see another area of the UK and spent less than £200.
I got cashback on everything
From school clothes and shoes to holidays and essentials if I was buying online I got cashback on it. This is a very easy way to make some extra money without putting in a lot of effort. You just click through to the website you’re ordering from through a cashback site such as Topcashback.
